Landscape Makeover for Updated Colonial Revival
This mature 1940 Colonial Revival home and large property were in need of significant rehabilitation efforts. Years of neglect and vacancy, combined with the inevitable impact from construction and crews, had left the landscape in shambles. The property was choked with invasive Norway maples and had a very dark, unwelcoming atmosphere. Significant rock outcroppings were found throughout the site.
This professional couple were interested in creating an elegant setting for their newly refurbished home that would both accommodate their active family, and lend itself to entertaining at a large scale. The existing driveway was narrow, unattractive and inadequate for accommodating visitor parking. Significant site work was needed to maximize usable space and to more effectively manage surface water. Creating neighbor-friendly privacy features was also a high priority for these new owners.
Working with and around the numerous rock outcroppings, we were able to incorporate a new semi-circular driveway and entry garden immediately in front of the house to welcome visitors. After removing over 40 invasive trees in the rear of the property, we created a multi-purpose backyard perfect for leisure as well as entertaining. Sophisticated stonework combined with a built-in BBQ resulted in a unique patio setup that improves circulation by linking different sections of the house and new addition. Dense plantings throughout the property provide privacy and four seasons of interest. Landscape lighting improves safety while simultaneously creating a beautiful, dramatic nightscape. Strong symmetry unifies the entire design, in keeping with the architectural style and period of the home and neighborhood.
The result is a decidedly updated landscape, complete with numerous modern conveniences, which simultaneously respects and complements the elegance of this period home.
